06/07/2004 Entry: "Remembering Reagan - an Ironic Statement"

One thing I didn't mention about the weekend was the event that spanned all the news channels. I try not to speak poorly of those who passed on, but with some of these reports, you'd think Reagan was the last great president we've had since Kennedy. I am going to pass on comments about the Amnesia of the Press, and I will refrain from making comparisons to the shallowness of an acting career and politicians. But in the 1980s, I was scared, poor, and certain World War 3 would be started from our side.

The irony of God's humor is that someone, who claims he can't remember where he was while people directly him did illegal and immoral things ... ended up with Alzheimer's.

Be careful what you wish for.

As a military brat, I was mighty steamed that MSNBC was the only network carrying D-Day footage. CNN was Reagan-focused, and Fox News seemed to have gone with the program decision of "Screw the Greatest Generation, it's now our patriotic duty to give the Gipper a tongue-bath!"

But then again, this was the president that laid a wreath at Bitburg...so in a way it is oddly fitting, I guess.

If anything else, it proves that U.S. Conservatives only care about folks in the military and their families when it provides a good photo-op, and not when their camera close-up was getting blocked.

Granted, I was only 5 when Reagan was elected, so I don't really have any memories of nuclear panic a la "The Day After" and whatnot. I guess Dubya will be the Republican president that I will grouse about 30 years from now.
