03/04/2004 Entry: "Trapped in the Closet"

I have been fighting this sinus infection now for over a week, and now I have a fever. I stayed home from work today so I can get some rest.

One of the worst things about being sick is boredom. I mean, I sit in bed, watch TV, with nothing to do. Housework piles up all around me, and I feel helpless and trapped. Last night I cleaned up the bedroom closet because somehow, a cat got trapped in there, and he made a huge mess by dragging everything off their hangers, shredded some toilet paper, and got cat hair everywhere. I should have stayed in bed, but it was so boring at 2am, and since Christine is away in Norfolk, I didn't have to worry about keeping her awake while I cleaned. I could even vacuum. But being sick, I didn't do a very good job, and when I woke up this morning and got a shirt, the closet did have a clean floor, but everything looked like it had just been jammed up against the wall. Stupid cat...

This isn't the first time this has happened. I don't know why the cats all want to go into that walk-in closet, but they do so like thieves whenever they get the chance. Often, they wait until someone opened the closet door and wandered a way for a moment, and in they go! Sometimes, the make a dash for it, and then hide, so I can't shoo them out. Of course, that usually means I didn't see them, and then they get trapped in there. Half an hour later (often after knocking stuff around), they meow and meow to be let out. Of course, sometimes we're already gone for the day. So the cat is trapped in there until we arrive home. This is when the serious wrecking begins. Yesterday, it was Cosmo, who in known for wrecking things when he's mad. Lamps, chairs, and anything off a table or dresser. Yesterday, as far as I can guess, he ran and hid in the morning, and when I got home, I didn't go to the bedroom right away. I think it was around 6pm, when I heard the noises. I opened the closet, and lo! Like a tornado had been trapped in there. Cosmo, who is very strong, had managed to pull down all the luggage off the shelves along with most of what was hanging up on the clothing rods. The mess in the closet was knee-deep. I was too sick to do any immediate repair, so I left it there angry as hell, but by 2am, I couldn't take it anymore, and so I went in and cleaned it up.

As I thought about it, it seemed funny because Cosmo and I were sharing the same feelings: trapped with the need to move stuff around to keep our minds off of our current situations. Heh.
