11/06/2003 Entry: "In sickness and in health"

I am on the edge of a massive illness. So far, though, I have not fallen off the edge into the darkness disease, but for the last few days, my feet have been ice-cold no matter how warm I keep them, which I have now learned is the first warning. I have also smelled the second warning, which is an odor I can smell everywhere. Last time it was garlic. Today it's a rancid mildew. It's so strong I can taste it, too, so I have been chugging mints. I took some echinacea, zinc, vitamin C, cold relievers, and tried to keep warm. So far, I haven't gotten more than a slight fever, some chills, and I am exhausted, but I haven't gotten really sick yet.

Here's to hoping I can win this fight!

Wow. Punkie, PLEASE take care of yourself! I know you have quit arranging SF Cons, even though you seem to enjoy them, you were wise to briefly discontinue something that was taxing your stamina.

Reading stories of your parents reminds me of what my mom has told me about her childhood; hardscrabble life in 1950s Pittsburgh, with parents that both had abusive alcoholic fathers. Her dad had a habit of exploding with rage over trifling crap, and her mom was a mostly untreated manic depressive. Ever notice that the Family Values crowd glosses over stuff like that when they talk glowingly of the 1950s?

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to tell you all of this to tell you that someone in the digital ether knows some of what you are coming from when trying to shake off bad crap that happened in your past; "getting over it" is a big oversimplification of the facts.

Hope that your pre-emptive medication and "cocooning" will help you beat the Martian Death Flu of Doom.
